If you want your parents or grandparents to join you in Canada, there are two main routes, and they are built for different goals. One leads to permanent residence but can involve a long wait and an element of luck. The other is not permanent, but it can reunite your family far sooner. Choosing well starts with understanding how each one actually works.
The Parents and Grandparents Program (sponsorship)
This program leads to permanent residence for your parents or grandparents, the strongest outcome, with access to health coverage and, eventually, citizenship. The catch is access. The program opens for a limited window each year and typically uses a randomized lottery to invite sponsors to apply, so being able to apply at all is not guaranteed in a given year. Sponsors also have to meet a minimum necessary income for several consecutive years and sign a long-term undertaking to support the people they sponsor.
The Super Visa
The Super Visa is a long-term visitor visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents. Rather than a standard visitor visa’s shorter stays, it allows extended visits per entry and is valid for multiple years. In exchange, the family must show qualifying medical insurance and prove that the host in Canada meets a minimum income level. It does not grant permanent residence or work rights, but it is often approved far faster than a sponsorship spot becomes available.
Comparing the two
Sponsorship is about permanence: full status, health coverage, a path to citizenship, but with uncertain timing and an income commitment. The Super Visa is about speed and flexibility: your family can be here for long stretches soon, without waiting on a lottery, but it remains a temporary status with insurance costs to maintain. Neither is simply better; they answer different questions.
You can often use both
Many families do not choose one forever. They use a Super Visa to reunite now while entering the sponsorship pool for a chance at permanent residence later. If a sponsorship invitation comes and the income requirement can be met, they pursue it; if not, the Super Visa keeps the family together in the meantime.
How to decide
If permanent residence is the priority and you can meet the income test, sponsorship is worth entering, with realistic expectations about timing.
